And recite the Qur’an aloud in a slow and melodious style”-Surah Muzzammil verse 4
The word Tajweed linguistically means ‘proficiency’ or ‘doing something well’. It comes from the same root letters as the word ‘Jayyid’ in Arabic (meaning ‘good’) Tajweed refers to the manner in which the Qur’an is read. This science meticulously elucidates how each letter is to be pronounced, as well as the word as a whole, both in context of other letters and words.
Upon completion of the Qaida, our students develop the ability to read the Arabic text accurately, fluently and with an understanding of the rules of Tajweed.
The knowledge of tajweed is based upon on four key areas:
  • Knowledge of the articulation points of the letters
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of the letters
  • Knowledge of what rules change in the letters due to the order of letters
  • Exercising the tongue and a lot of repetition
Students accomplish this by starting with reading small suwar such as Surah Naas, Falaq and Ikhlaas from the last juz of the Qur’an. By the time a student has completed the 30th juz, students are able to read with the correct pronunciation, tajweed and with increasing fluency. All students go on to read the whole Qur’an under the guidance of their teacher.
Many students that posses a solid understanding of Tajweed and can read with proficient fluency progress to our accelerated reading program, Khatamul Qur’an and complete their first reading of the whole Qur’an at an accelerated pace.
